Volunteers Create Ripples of Change

Each day at Covenant House Vancouver, something remarkable happens.

A warm meal is served. A tutoring session gives a youth the confidence to take their next test. A thoughtful conversation reminds someone that they matter.

Behind so many of these moments are our dedicated volunteers — and this National Volunteer Week (April 27 to May 3), we are celebrating them with full hearts and endless gratitude.

This year’s theme, Volunteers Make Waves, perfectly reflects on what we witness at CHV, every day. Whether it’s an individual who offers weekly mentorship or a corporate group that rolls up their sleeves to pack care kits, each act of service creates ripples of hope, strength, and connection for youth on their journeys.

By the Numbers
Over the past year, our volunteers have been a powerful force for good. Here’s how they’ve shown up:

  • On average, 110 volunteers per month gave their time and care
  • 8,475 hours were generously donated
  • 62 corporate donor groups joined hands with us to create impact

These numbers are more than just stats — they represent thousands of conversations, acts of kindness, and moments where youth felt seen and supported.

Voices from the Heart
“Mentorship has opened my eyes and my heart to the youth in this province who face serious challenges. It has given me new awareness of the small dedication we can make in someone else’s life. I am so grateful for my relationship with these youth, and I care about their future greatly.”

“Working with the youth has given me perspective about people and how their circumstance can really shape their experiences in life. And that a lot of barriers that people face can be lessened with the support that an organization like Covenant House provides.”

These stories remind us that making waves doesn’t require a big splash. It’s about consistency, compassion, and community.

Every Ripple Counts
From serving meals with our Food Services team, and tutoring youth who are pursuing education goals, to organizing donations in our Drop-In Centre, volunteers are woven into nearly every aspect of CHV’s work. And the impact goes both ways — many volunteers say that their experience has changed their lives just as much as the lives of the youth they support.

“I came in thinking I was here to help others. But I’ve learned just as much — about resilience, about hope, and about the power of human connection.”
