The CRA has confirmed that it will extend the 2024 deadline for charitable donations, due to the Canada Post strike.
Eligible gifts made to charities (and other organizations who qualify) may be claimed from January 1 – February 28, 2025, on 2024 income tax returns. There is also the option to claim donations made during the extension period on 2025 returns.
The extension applies to donations made by cash, credit card, cheque, money order, or electronic payment by individuals, corporations, or trusts. Donations do not need to be made through the mail to apply. There are some exceptions. Find out more.
Even with the potential changes at the federal government and this legislation only being a draft, the Canada Revenue Agency has confirmed that it is able to administer changes to these rules before parliament approves the changes, retroactively.
The postal strike greatly impacted our donations, last year. If you have previously given but were holding off because of the postal strike, we hope that you will consider giving today.
