Family rejection is the most common cause of LGBTQIA2S+ youth homelessness.
A youth who identified as transgender came to Covenant House as he could no longer remain in the family home as he was not accepted for who he is. During a conversation at the beginning of his stay, his Youth Worker asked him how he was settling in. He let them know, that staying in the Crisis Program was quite different, as he had never lived in a shared living environment before.
He explained that he felt accepted for who he is, and no one had questioned him about his choices or identity. He openly shared that he felt safe at Covenant House Vancouver, not judged by anyone as he continued his transition journey.
All young people deserve unconditional love and absolute respect. Covenant House Vancouver strives to be a safe and inclusive space for all youth.
