Family rejection is the most common cause of LGBTQ2S+ youth homelessness

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, gender non-binary, and two-spirited youth are overrepresented in the homeless community. We strongly believe all youth deserve unconditional love, absolute respect, and to be supported relentlessly.

o 25-40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ2S+

o Family rejection is the most common cause of LGBTQ2S+ youth homelessness

o LGBTQ2S+ youth are much more likely to struggle with mental health concerns, including suicide

o Compared to the general population, transgender, and gender non-conforming people in Canada are also:

  • 7 times more likely to abuse drugs or other substances
  • 5 times more likely to have mental health issues
  • 5 times more likely to attempt suicide
  • 2 times as likely to experience severe poverty and homelessness
