We serve the youth well-presented meals…because they’re worth it

Today, we’re excited to bring you a post by one of our staff members. In this story, Mirabel talks about the work she does on our Food Services team. She also shares a few reasons why she loves working at Covenant House Vancouver:

Hi, my name is Mirabel and I’m the Assistant Manager of Food Services here at Covenant House Vancouver.

While I was in the Culinary Arts program at Vancouver Community College, I also volunteered in the Covenant House Vancouver kitchen at Pender street. Preparing food for the youth and serving the homeless have opened my eyes into a much more meaningful path that I can take with my culinary career. I knew that I can be of service to vulnerable youth through my skills in food services. And I also have enjoyed my time as a volunteer.

Serving food for homeless youth

After one year, Covenant House offered me a full-time job, and the rest is history.

Looking back now, I knew at the time that I could work at any restaurant or hotel. But I chose to work here at Covenant House Vancouver as it gives me greater fulfillment. I find joy in knowing that I am a part of an organization that cares for youth with unconditional love.

adding food to the plate

We get many compliments from the youth for the food we create, and this makes our team so happy. It gives us motivation and a passion for our work – you can never buy these things.

Day after day, we try our very best to serve the youth well-presented meals, made with love. Because they’re worth it.

finishing touches on a plate

After a meal service, one of the best feelings is getting to stand there and watch the young people leave the dining room satisfied and with big smiles on their faces. This gives me comfort and a deep satisfaction with my job.
