In the spring of 2019, our Housing Support Workers Linda and Marc became RentSmart educators. They attended a three-day course and learned how to teach the RentSmart Program.
RentSmart is a course to teach people life skills on how to obtain and maintain housing. It can be very hard to find safe and affordable housing for our youth in the lower mainland. Our Housing Support Workers view RentSmart as a way to help youth maintain housing once they have secured it.
The RentSmart curriculum addresses many subjects including effectively applying for housing, rights and responsibilities of both tenants and landlords, effective communication, dealing with discrimination, managing finances and much more.
Recently Linda and Marc successfully facilitated their first RentSmart course at Covenant House Vancouver. The course is 12 hours in length, and it was taught over three days. Youth from our Crisis Program and Community Support Services attended, and every youth who participated graduated!
