The youth worker is responsible for the direct implementation of Covenant House Vancouver’s philosophy, policies and principles as they pertain to client care. The youth worker oversees building activity, including client, program, building security, operations and community relations. Provide services to youth living on the street and/or in the community.
- Initiate, develop and maintain relationships with at risk youth 16-24 years of age
- Assist clients in identifying attainable short and long-term goals, strategies for meeting these goals, and an action plan for implementation
- Assist clients in exiting street life, maintaining independence in the community, and/or accessing supported living
- Provide youth with practical resources including food, clothing, transportation etc
- Ensure adherence to and role model Covenant House principles and core values
- Conduct intake/admission interview and participate in assessment managing through daily contact, and individualized Client Plan with youth on caseload for the duration of their stay
- Support youth with daily routines in the highly structured environment
- Assess and address the immediate needs of either resident and non-resident youth, especially those who are seeking support when other service providers are closed
- Address serious behaviour, mental health, emotional, and addictions issues through brief counselling, implementing Special Covenant, defusing/managing critical incidents, supportive relationships, and referrals to other CHV programs and/or community service providers
- Assist youth with accessing community support networks
- Coordinate youth meetings and activities
- Accompaniment to appointments, visitation in hospital or independent living situation, 1 to 1 support, risk assessments, supportive counselling
- Greet clients upon entry to the program, introduce the services provided, orient new clients, complete program intake/admission
- Diploma or degree in related social service
- Minimum of 2 years related experience
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Non-violent crisis intervention certificate
- Valid first aid certificate
- Familiar with runaway and street involved youth issues
- Basic computer skills
- Self awareness
- Preferred Start Date: ASAP
- Shifts: Coverage for all shifts on an as need basis
