Here at Covenant House we have 5 principals that help guide us in the work that we do: Immediacy, Sanctuary, Value Communication, Structure and Choice. The story below speaks to Immediacy which is a very important principal when ever working with our youth, but is an especially critical principal for the Drop-In.
Yesterday a well known and hard working young man came to the Drop-In and was having a really horrible day as he had just lost his housing. Right away a youth worker saw that one of our mental health doctors had space for an appointment and got the youth in to speak with the doctor. The youth worker knew that this would be great for the youth on two levels: one, the youth would get a chance to talk about what he was going through and two, the doctor had access to supportive housing.
The doctor knew that there were openings at a great supported living building and got in touch with colleagues at the Inner City Mental Health team who were able to call up a supportive housing facility that was able to get the youth a room that very day.
On occasion the stars really do align and we are able to get the youth what they need immediately. Thanks to our quick thinking youth worker, the on the ball doctor and the accommodating supportive housing facility, the youth was able to end his day with a safe place to live and a smile on his face.
